SGV Food Club: Gathering and Building Community

The San Gabriel Valley, a suburb east of Downtown Los Angeles, California is known for its mix of Asian and Latino demographics that is clear in the food, festivals, and cultures of the area. In the summer of 2016, poets and writers from such organizations as Kundiman, Cave Canem, VONA, and Macondo Writers Workshop began a project where they meet once a week in the SGV for a community dinner of local fair as a way to celebrate our different literary endeavors and personal triumphs, as well as be a support for personal pain and trauma. A writing group that chooses to eat and talk instead of write, we come together and find ways to promote and support each other's books, projects, and social justice actions. We are an ear, an advisory board, a promoting team, and so much more.
On this panel, poets will share how these weekly meet ups with food and friends has made a positive impact on their careers and what they’ve learned from the project. The panel will conclude with a short sampling of SGV poetry and dumplings.

With Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, Cathy Linh Che, Soraya Membreno, and Vanessa Angelica Villareal
